Context
Amid talk about equitable education, seamless transitions from one class level to the next, and shifting smoothly from primary to secondary and then to tertiary levels of education, there exists the reality that many students are still struggling to read and write and are under-performing. Although the results of many years of literacy research have contributed significantly to a wealth of knowledge about more effective classroom practices, in reality, not much of what is recommended is actually implemented in classroom pedagogical practices. Education Services Plus ( ESP) was formed out of concern about existing gaps between reading research and what many students actually receive as instruction. Out of that fundamental concern, ESP is committed to providing professional support to the following:
(a) parents who have concerns about the ability of their children’s schools to meet the individual learning needs of their children
(b) teachers who need to develop knowledge and skills for implementing more effective instructional practices in the realities of their classrooms.
